Okay I’ve got it! Hit the arrow on the far right at the end of the conversation and then send it to any of the choices offered. Did it!!

1. Always pull up the stopper in the bathroom sink when putting in the diamond studs your husband got you for your birthday so you don't have to spend $189 incl tax for a plumber to do a job your DIY husband could have done in his sleep for nothing if you'd been willing to admit why it was necessary.

2. Sometimes the smartest, most useful thing you can say in a situation is nothing at all.

3. It's often wiser to be kind instead of right.

Ooh I love this post so much. I’ve received tons of good advice in my life and a fair amount of crappy advice too. But I remember a friend saying to me once while we were out on a dark wet cold run early in the morning (it’s funny - I can remember exactly where I was) - “if it matters to you, it’s important”. That kind of blew my mind because I was always minimising my feelings because they inconvenienced others. This was something that shifted in me and it changed my life eventually.

I love that from both sides. I mean yes, if it matters to me it’s important to me, that is a gift to understand. But also how I might have minimized other people’s desires. If it matters to them it’s important. Also a gift!

The best advice I’ve gotten is “the worst they can tell you is no”. In other words, ask for what you want. Apply for the job. Ask someone out for coffee. Submit your writing for publication. No won’t kill you.

We can all survive a “no” right? Thanks so much for sharing! xN

Wonderful advice! I’m also very happy to report that I finally got my hands on a copy of Elisabeth Strout’s new book so I’ll be reading it in anticipation of your book group.

I like Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s advice on marriage, via her mother-in-law on the big day: “It helps to be a little deaf.”

Natalie Serber's avatar

Well, we’ve both achieved that in my marriage! xN
