one of my all time favorite movies is Smoke Signals, based on The Absolute Diary of a Part Time Indian. and if you haven't watched the hulu series Reservation Dogs, recommend. sooooo powerful. funny, poignant, magical realism. three seasons that stole my heart.
I too loved SMOKE SIGNALS. I thought it was from Alexie's story collection THE LONE RANGER AND TONTO FIST FIGHT IN HEAVEN? There was also a film from his poetry collection in 2002, THE BUSINESS OF FANCYDANCING, which was my first intro to Alexie. And I remember being so moved. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303313/
Imagine my delight, when in 2012 he mentioned my book on NPR. Saying if someone was looking for a writer similar to Lorrie Moore, they should read Natalie Serber! I was listening to Morning Edition and nearly spit out my coffee!
re: My mom, tender is a big ask. I'm hoping for sweet moments. And we are saving RESERVATION DOGS till we return home and daylight is brief. We've heard so many good things about it. Thanks for reading and for reaching out. xN
The complicated thing about offering love to Alexie's work is that he has a history of bad actions. He is accused of causing harm to young women writers. And I still love his book. And I still think we should read his book. Life is complicated. Claire Dederer wrote about exactly this in her book, MONSTERS. Love the art, feel sad/bad/disgusted by the actions of the artist. It's a dilemma.
Big fan of Mike Birbiglia. Looking forward to watching this new special.
His podcast is terrific too!
